Wasps are the pest we're most often asked to kill unnecessarily.
That's not a criticism of anyone who calls. A nest near a doorway is genuinely hazardous, several species defend aggressively, and stings hurt. But a substantial share of the nests we're asked to remove are in locations nobody goes, belong to species that barely defend at all, or are discovered late enough in the season that the colony will be dead within weeks regardless of what anyone does.
And wasps are predators. For most of the season a colony is hunting caterpillars, flies, and other insects continuously to feed its larvae — a single active nest removes an enormous number of them from a garden. Several species are also incidental pollinators. Removing a nest that posed no threat is a real subtraction from the space around your house.
So this service has two jobs, and the first one is deciding whether the second is warranted.

Slender, long-legged, with legs visibly dangling in flight. Nest: an open comb — a single layer of exposed cells on a short stalk, under eaves, soffits, deck rails, porch ceilings, door frames, and inside grills and unused equipment. Colonies stay small, defending only at close range.

Stockier, brightly banded, with legs held tight to the body in flight. Nest: enclosed and usually hidden — in the ground in an old rodent burrow, in wall voids, soffits, under decks, in compost, and in dense ground cover. Highly defensive, stings repeatedly, and ground nests are triggered by vibration — a mower or footsteps can set one off without anyone approaching the entrance.

Black with white or ivory markings. Nest: the classic grey football, enclosed, hanging from a branch, eave, or shrub, sometimes reaching considerable size by late summer. Strongly defensive, reacting at greater distance than paper wasps.

Fuzzy, golden-brown, often in a large swarm cluster or an established colony in a wall or tree. We don't treat these under any circumstances. A swarm is temporary and usually moves on within a day or two; an established colony in a structure is a live removal job for a beekeeper. We'll help identify which you have.
Large, round, very fuzzy, nesting in small numbers in ground cavities, compost, and insulation. Docile, important pollinators, and colonies die out naturally at season's end. Removal only where there's a genuine conflict, relocation preferred.
Large, shiny black hairless abdomen, hovering around timber and drilling round holes into fascia and rails. A structural problem rather than a stinging one — the males that hover aggressively cannot sting at all.
A photo from a safe distance settles most of this. Photograph the nest shape and the entrance activity rather than getting close enough to see the insect.
This is the section other companies leave out, and it's the most useful one here.
Wasp colonies are annual. In most regions, workers die off with cold weather, the nest is abandoned, and it is not reused the following year. A nest found in late season, away from traffic, will resolve itself within weeks.
Location decides risk far more than species does. A yellowjacket nest at the back of a large garden, away from paths and mowing routes, is a different proposition from a paper wasp nest above a back door.
Confirm the species, tell you the actual risk radius, advise on avoiding the area, and — where it's worth doing — seal the location after the season so next year's queen picks somewhere else. That last part is the durable answer, and it involves nothing chemical.
And what we'd rather you didn't do: treat a nest because it's there. Wasps hunt an enormous quantity of garden pests over a season, and a colony you never go near is doing more good than harm.

The failure mode is being stung repeatedly by an aggressive colony, on a ladder, in the dark. That combination is how people get seriously hurt.
For an exposed paper wasp nest at arm's length that may be manageable. For a yellowjacket ground nest or a hornet nest it is not.
A can of spray into an entrance disturbs hundreds or thousands without killing them, and you're standing at the entrance when they emerge.
Spraying or sealing a wall void entrance without properly treating the colony frequently drives insects inward — through the void and into living space.
The single most consequential mistake in this work. The insects don't die quietly inside; they chew and search for another way out, and the other way out is frequently your ceiling.
A significant share of stinging insect injuries involve a ladder rather than a sting. And multiple stings are a medical concern independent of allergy — yellowjackets and hornets sting repeatedly, and a defensive response delivers a lot of them fast.
If anyone has a known allergy, don't approach the nest at all — not even to photograph it.

Not every wasp problem is a nest problem, and treating for one when you have the other wastes a visit.
Practical measures: keep bins lidded and clean, rinse recycling, clear fallen fruit, cover food and drinks outdoors, use covered cups rather than open cans, and site bins away from seating.
They can reduce foraging pressure in a defined area, but sited badly they draw wasps toward the space you're protecting — and they're indiscriminate, catching plenty of non-target insects. If used at all, they belong at the property perimeter, well away from where people sit.

If a nest is disturbed, walk away in a straight line and get indoors or into a vehicle. Don't flail, don't stand still. Don't jump into water — they'll wait.
A normal local reaction — pain, swelling, redness at the site — is common and manageable with cold compresses.
A large local reaction covering a broader area can occur without being an allergic emergency, but it's worth mentioning to a doctor.
Emergency medical attention immediately for: difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, hives spreading away from the site, dizziness, or collapse. Call emergency services rather than waiting.
Stings inside the mouth or throat need medical attention regardless of allergy status, because of airway swelling — the reason for the advice about open cans.
