There are two ways to run a rodent job, and the difference between them is whether the building is sealed at the end of it.
The common version is a bait programme. Stations go out, they get serviced monthly, and rodent numbers stay suppressed for as long as the service continues. It works, in the sense that you see fewer rodents. It also never ends, because nothing about the building changed — the gaps that let them in are still there, and the bait is doing the job the structure should be doing.
The other version treats the building as the problem. Find every opening, remove what's inside using traps rather than poison, seal each entry with material that can't be chewed, and verify. It takes more time on site, involves more ladder work and more crawling around, and it costs more up front. Then it stops.

Four reasons, and none of them is squeamishness.
Traps put the animal in front of you. You know how many came out, and you know when it stops. A bait programme tells you nothing except how much bait disappeared, which could mean two rodents or twenty.
An animal that consumes bait dies wherever it happens to be, which in an interior programme is frequently inside a void. That produces an odour lasting weeks, a fly and beetle problem feeding on the carcass, and a retrieval job that costs more than the original work. Traps put the carcass in a place you can remove it from.
A poisoned rodent that leaves the building is eaten by something. Owls, hawks, foxes, and domestic cats and dogs are all exposed through that route, and anticoagulant residues are well documented in predator populations. That's not an abstract environmental point — it's a consequence of a decision made in your yard.
Suppressing a population indefinitely with poison is not the same as removing it. As long as the entry point is open, the bait is compensating for a structural defect, and it will be doing so in five years.

Mouse droppings are small and scattered widely — a mouse produces a great many per day and leaves them wherever it travels. Rat droppings are substantially larger and concentrated in fewer, heavier deposits along established routes.
Mice are curious and investigate anything new within hours, which is why mouse trapping frequently produces results the first night. Rats are neophobic — they avoid unfamiliar objects for days. A rat trap catching nothing for a week isn't failing; it hasn't been accepted yet. Moving traps around resets that clock every time.
A mouse may spend its whole life within a small radius and never leave the building. Rats travel considerably further and frequently nest outside while feeding inside.

Species, population indicators, routes, nesting areas, entry points, and the food, water, and harbourage supporting them. Interior, exterior, roof line, and any crawlspace or attic — because the entry point is almost never in the room where you saw the rodent.
Traps placed on established routes rather than in open floor. Rodents travel against walls; a trap in the open catches nothing.
Every entry point closed with gnaw-resistant material. This is the stage that ends the problem and the stage most commonly deferred or quietly dropped from a quote.
Monitoring for continued activity, confirming seals held, checking no new routes opened. Rodents test barriers, and a failed seal is worth finding in week three rather than month six.
They die in voids, or they chew inward into living space. Removal first, exclusion second, always.
This is the part worth paying for, and worth knowing what a proper job looks like.
Copper mesh, stainless wool, hardware cloth, sheet metal, and mortar or cement-based fillers.
Expanding foam alone, steel wool that rusts, plastic sheeting, tape, and caulk on its own. Foam has a legitimate role as a sealant around mesh or metal. It has no role as the barrier, and a mouse is through it in a night.
If a pencil fits, seal it. If a thumb fits, treat it as a rat route and prioritise it.
Rodents contaminate surfaces and stored food with urine and droppings continuously as they travel — along every route they use, not in one place.
Droppings, urine, and nesting material are associated with several transmissible diseases, and dried droppings disturbed into the air are a specific exposure route.
Don't dry-sweep or vacuum rodent droppings. Both aerosolise particles. Ventilate first, dampen the material with a disinfectant solution, and remove it wet, wearing gloves and a mask.
Discard gnawed or contaminated food packaging. Sealed metal, glass, and hard plastic containers are why serious infestations still leave some food intact.
Nesting material in insulation is a contamination issue as well as a pest one, and heavily soiled insulation is frequently better replaced than treated.
Rodents also introduce fleas, ticks, and mites, which persist after the rodents are gone and become a second call.

And by then insulation is usually soiled and compacted along runways. Entry is at the roof line — soffit gaps, fascia junctions, and vents — so exclusion involves ladder and roof work, which is the part of the quote that varies most between contractors. Entry is usually low — under doors, at utility penetrations, and around cabinetry bases — and the population is exploiting a food source directly. Removal is faster; the exclusion work is finer and more detailed, because the gaps are smaller and more numerous.
