Mosquito control is the one pest service where the standard approach involves spraying an outdoor space that other things live in.
That's worth saying plainly, because it's rarely said at all. A barrier treatment applied to the vegetation around a property doesn't distinguish between mosquitoes and everything else resting in that vegetation — butterflies, beneficial predatory insects, and anything that happens to be on the underside of a leaf when the spray reaches it. Repeated through a season, across a neighbourhood, that adds up.
It also, on its own, doesn't work particularly well — which is the more useful point.
Every mosquito biting you grew up in water, almost all of it within a short flight of where you're standing, and much of it in containers on your own property. Kill the adults and the water keeps producing more on its own schedule. Kill the larvae, and the adults never exist.
So the order matters, and it isn't the order most services use. Water first, using a bacterial larvicide that acts on mosquito larvae and leaves nearly everything else alone. Then habitat. Then, if pressure still exceeds what those achieve, targeted adult treatment placed where mosquitoes actually rest.

Most people picture ponds and ditches. The reality on a typical residential property is far smaller and far closer to the house.
If it holds water for about a week, it can produce mosquitoes. That's a shorter window than people assume, and it's why weekly is the right interval for the walk-around.
Mosquitoes complete the aquatic stages — egg, larva, pupa, adult — quickly, and in warm conditions that can happen in a matter of days.
Anything holding water for roughly a week can produce a generation. Anything emptied weekly produces none.
That's the whole logic of source reduction. You don't need to eliminate every drop. You need to break the cycle before it completes, and tipping something out on a Saturday does exactly that regardless of whether it refills on Sunday.
A few days of heavy rain fills every container on the property at once. About a week later the yard is unusable. The rain didn't bring the mosquitoes — it started them.
Spray the resting areas, clear the current adults, and the containers you didn't empty deliver a new generation on their own timetable. The improvement flattens well short of what people expected.

Why the selectivity mattersA pond, a catch basin, or a rain garden isn't a sterile container — it holds a whole community of organisms, several of which are eating mosquito larvae for you. A broad-spectrum treatment removes those too. A bacterial larvicide removes the mosquitoes and leaves the predators working.
Where it goesCatch basins, drainage channels, tree holes, ornamental features, rain barrels, low areas that hold water after rain, and any standing water that's a permanent feature of the property. Slow-release formulations last weeks in a single application.
It treats water. It has no effect on adults already flying, which is why it works best as a season-long programme started early rather than a reaction in July — and why it pairs with, rather than replaces, habitat work. And it doesn't cover pupae well, so timing and repeat intervals matter.
A property with a comprehensive larval programme needs dramatically less adult treatment, or in some cases none. That's the outcome we aim at, and it's cheaper for you as well as lighter on the yard.
If adult treatment is warranted, where it goes matters enormously — for the result and for everything else in the garden.
Adult mosquitoes don't spend the day flying. They rest in cool, humid, shaded, wind-sheltered places: the undersides of leaves on shrubs and low branches, tall grass and damp ground cover, ivy on walls and fences, under decks and porches, behind stored items, along fence lines, and on the shaded side of structures.
Which means treatment follows the shade, not the lawn. Spraying open sunny grass achieves almost nothing, because that's not where they are.
And it means the treated area can be small. A shaded perimeter band and specific resting zones, rather than the whole property. Less area treated, less material used, better result — the same arithmetic as everywhere else in this trade.
Being clear about this saves money that would otherwise buy nothing.
They kill large numbers of insects and mosquitoes are a negligible fraction of the catch. What they do kill is largely beneficial, which makes them actively counterproductive in a garden.
No credible evidence they repel mosquitoes.
A modest effect in a very small radius in still air, effectively nothing in a breeze.
The oils have some effect when crushed and applied to skin. A plant sitting in a pot doesn't release enough to protect an area.
It kills the adults present at that moment and leaves nothing behind. Without larval work it's a very short-lived improvement — and it's the version of this service with the highest material use and the lowest durability.
And one thing that does work but gets dismissed: properly formulated personal repellent, applied as directed. For being outside in mosquito habitat rather than in your own treated yard, it's the most reliable protection there is.
We'd rather tell you this than sell a treatment that under-delivers because the containers are still full.
Barrier treatments last weeks, not months. The active material breaks down under sunlight and weather — which is why adult-focused programmes run on repeat cycles and why they use more material across a season than a larval-led approach.
Rain shortens barrier residual and refills every container simultaneously. A wet period frequently produces both a shorter treatment life and a bigger larval crop.
Populations track temperature and rainfall. Warm wet stretches produce sharp increases about a week later, and treatment timed to that beats treatment timed to the calendar.
Expect reduction, not elimination. Mosquitoes fly in from neighbouring properties and drainage corridors. A well-run programme makes a yard usable; it does not create a mosquito-free zone, and anyone promising one is selling something.
Judge it by whether you can sit outside, not by whether you never see a mosquito.
And expect the programme to improve over the season. Source reduction compounds — every generation prevented is a generation not laying eggs on the property, which is exactly why the larval-first approach ends the season using less material than it started with.
Broadcast treatment of an outdoor space is not a trivial act and it deserves care.
The more of the result that comes from source reduction and habitat work, the less product goes onto the property. That's better for the garden and cheaper for you.
